The democratization effect of technology
The technological evolution continues to transform the media world and presents numerous challenges to broadcasters such as CBC/Radio-Canada. How can broadcasters select the most promising technologies in an age when consumers’ adoption cycle for new technology is shorter than ever?
What trends are currently being studied by Radio Canada? How can they help our public broadcaster fulfil its mission of enriching Canada’s cultural life and democratic heritage? These are among the issues that will be addressed by Sylvain Lafrance, Executive Vice-President of CBC/Radio-Canada.
Mr. Lafrance oversees all aspects of CBC/Radio-Canada's French-language programming services, which include, among other things, Télévision de Radio-Canada, Réseau de l'information de Radio-Canada (RDI), Radio de Radio-Canada, Radio Canada International (RCI), RCI viva, and Radio-Canada.ca.
Prior to taking on his current position as Executive Vice-President of French Services, Mr. Lafrance held several other positions within the Corporation. He assumed responsibility for Radio de Radio-Canada, after managing the programming for regional stations of this network, from Montréal. Earlier in his career, he was appointed Executive Assistant to the Senior Vice-President, English and French Radio Services. Mr. Lafrance had previously served as Program Director for Radio de Radio-Canada in the National Capital Region, Executive Producer, Producer, and Senior News Editor. He first worked for CBC/Radio-Canada as a journalist.
Parallel to his career at CBC/Radio-Canada, Mr. Lafrance taught journalism at Algonquin College for two years and lectured in communications at Université du Québec en Outaouais. At the international level, Mr. Lafrance chaired Les Radios Francophones Publiques. He represents CBC/Radio-Canada on the Board of TV5MONDE, the first international French-language television network, which is partially owned by CBC/Radio-Canada.
